During the mission trip you got to know a local youth.
He just gave his life to Christ and you are thrilled.
As part of the new believers kit, you give him a checklist of the things he needs to "denounce"
Worshipped idols - checked
Worshipped ancestors- checked
Visited temples with parents- checked
Visiting tomb of ancestors- checked
This guy has some serious cleaning up to do...
"You cannot follow what your family is doing anymore!
You've got to tell them! You've got to stand up for your faith! Don't be afraid! Don't be ashamed!"
The issue here is the detribalising of youths. In our evangelistic fervour, we advocate that they disrespect their ancestors, abandon their "pagan" social traditions, without even trying to understand their inherent values.
"detribalising young people: weaning them away from old loyalties with out giving them a corresponding sense of belonging to something else..."
"Here's my email address. Our team leaves for Singapore tomorrow. Good luck!"
"the well-intentioned but needless destruction of valid constructive features of some cultures has undermined the very society which missionaries have sough to aid..."
